Resin Casting

Types of Resin we can use for Art Curating.

We mostly use Epoxy Resin for art curating
There are two types of Epoxy Resin available in the market :

  1. Single or One-part resin (UV resin).
  2. Two-part resin.

1.Single or One-part resin (UV resin): It is also called as UV resin, This is a single part resin where it is cured by exposing to UV light, this is much more versatile to use but it is expensive for bulk use.

2.Two-part resin: In this, we get two chemicals one is Resin and other is Hardner

They are two types of two-part resins:

  • Grade 1 ultra Gloss (2:1)
  • Grade 1 ultra Clear (3:1)

Grade 1 ultra Gloss (2:1):

In Grade 1 ultra Gloss (2:1) resin, we have to mix 2 parts of Resin with 1 part of Hardener, wherein this the final product is not UV resistant, it turns into in pale yellow when it is exposed to UV light but it is the cheapest resin available in the market.

Grade 1 ultra Clear (3:1):

In Grade 1 ultra Clear (3:1) resin, we have to mix 3 parts of Resin with 1 part of Hardener, this is UV resisted and much more scratch resistant than the Grade 1 ultra Gloss. On the mohrs scale of hardness can be rated from 6.5 to 7.

Tools used in Resin Casting :
  • Wooden pop sticks.
  • Weight machine for larger quantities.
  • 20ml disposable syringes.
  • 2 Measuring cups which are PP rated plastics or any Disposable cups.
  • Disposable gloves.
  • Face mask.
  • A blow torch or a Drinking straw.

Steps for Resin Casting:

  1. Process for single part resin (UV resin): In this, we have only one part so we can use it directly on the art for curating. After pouring on to the respective mold or artifact just check if there are any kind of bubbles. If any just use a staw to blow hot air on to the surface very gently so that the bubbles vanishNow after the bubbles are disappeared just initiate the curing process by using the UV lamp. This process would take up to 5-8min depending upon the temperature.
  2. Process for two-part resin: In this, we have two types of resins.
    • Grade 1 ultra Gloss (2:1):
      • Step 1: Mix the Resin 2 parts and hardener 1 part with a wooden pop stick or any PP rated plastic spoon. Stir it for 3 minutes and keep the mixture aside for 15 minutes, so that the chemical reaction takes place and bubbles pop up.
      • Step 2: Pour and spread over the artifact and make sure it is leveled to the ground.
      • Step 3: Blow gently over the bubbles using a straw or use a blow torch (do not overexpose it to the flame it may burn the Resin).
      • Step 4: Cover it and let it cure for 24 Hours.
    • Grade 1 ultra Gloss (3:1):
      • Step 1: Mix the Resin 3 parts and hardener 1 part with a wooden pop stick or any PP rated plastic spoon.

Things we need to know before Starting.

There are a few things I came across when I was casting some products for test purpose.

  1. Temperature constrain.
  2. Leveling issues.
  3. Air bubbles.
  4. Ghosting effects.
  5. Fumes allergy.

  1. Temperature constraints: This temperature effect is only applicable to the Two-part Resin mostly, in cold conditions the Resin takes more time to cure and if the temperature is more air bubbles will follow the reaction. So, it is better to maintain a room temperature of 25 degrees C.
  2. Leveling issues: As the Resin chemical will be in liquid form it tends to flow or level itself to the ground. So, better you check the angle of the ground and make sure your art is flat with the respective ground so your art surface comes out even on all sides.
  3. Air bubbles: As I said that the temperature effects the formation of air bubbles inside the resin. There are other factors which influence the Resin Casting like pouring the resin immediately after u have mixed it or mixing it very fast. So, for this issue "SLOW AND STEADY" comes into the picture give it some time as mentioned in the steps.
  4. Ghosting effects: This comes when there is an uneven mixing of the two parts in the resin or you have disturbed the resin mixture in the curing process.
  5. Fumes allergy: As the Resin mixture reacts it produces heat and fumes as Bi-products. This fumes produce irritation to the nostrils on in haling them. So, use a face mask and do mix the Resin in good ventilated area.
